5 Halloween Costume Ideas Inspired by Fashionable Film Characters
Still not sure what to wear to your upcoming Halloween parties? When you’re out of ideas, one of the most reliable sources of inspiration is cinema. In fact, some of the most iconic fashion moments can be attributed to characters throughout film history: Think Andy Sachs in her Chanel blazer and boots, Mrs. Robinson in her leopard coat, or Andie Walsh’s upcycled prom dress in Pretty in Pink. There’s so much to choose from—and none of these looks involve a cliché costume! In fact, your favorite women in film are so timeless and chic, you’ll want to incorporate some of their signature pieces into your regular wardrobe. Or perhaps you already have some!
Need a few more examples to help you dream up a costume this year? We’ve got you covered. Ahead find five seriously stylish film characters that are actually so simple to recreate: Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction, Annie Hall, Erin Brockovich, Barbie, and Elvira Hancock (who inspired our CURATEUR-in-chief Rachel Zoe’s costume at a past Halloween party!). And if you don’t yet own some of their quintessential wardrobe and beauty items, look no further than The Shoppe! Our constantly updated collection of apparel, accessories, and cosmetics can help you achieve these looks with ease.
When Pulp Fiction was released, Mia Wallace influenced women everywhere to cut their hair into a blunt bob with bangs and reevaluate their relationship with capris. Her iconic look of cropped black cigarette pants and a crisp white button down will never go out of style, and the same can be said of her ever-present cat-eye and red lips. This also makes Mia such an easy Halloween costume to recreate. Add in a fake syringe or bloody nose if you want some extra authenticity.
The titular character in Annie Hall is unforgettable—not just for her quirkiness and humor, but for her cool menswear style. To try this costume, all you need is a vest (worn over a button-down), a pair of pleated trousers, and a tie. But to make sure you won’t be mistaken for anyone else, add on a pair of 1970s-style tinted glasses and a bowler hat.
Julia Roberts’ portrayal as real-life Erin Brockovich single mom-turned-paralegal-turned-activist won her an Oscar—and won a place in the hearts of millions. Her brassy, confident attitude was also reflected in her wardrobe: Her unapologetically sexy take on workwear included sheer blouses, mini skirts, and chain belts. If you’re going as Brockovich this Halloween, the addition of gold hoops, messy hair in a clip, and a pair of tortoise oval sunnies will take this look over the top.
Given the success of this 2023 blockbuster, expect to see a TON of Barbies this Halloween. To set yourself apart, look to the doll’s history for a little more inspiration. For example, Malibu Barbie can be easily created with a floral sarong and plenty of pink accessories. Don’t forget the signature blond hair and a pair of rose-colored glasses for the full effect.
Follow our CURATEUR-in-chief’s lead and dress up as Scarface’s Elvira Hancock (especially if you’re looking for a couple’s costume and have a partner willing to be your Tony Montana). Her signature look can be accomplished with a blonde bob, a slinky dress, and tons of sparkling jewelry. Complete the transformation with a smoky ’80s eye and burnt red lip.
